Libby's Excellent London Adventures

Adventure #2

***************************************************

The Museum of London:  In a word, wonderful!  The Museum of London encompasses the evolution of this great city from pre-Roman times to the present.  Each era is given its own section and each section tries to give an accurate picture of life at that time, using artifacts recovered during building construction and dredging of the Thames.  This is no cut-and-dried museum.  Exhibits are lively and "user friendly".  Don't miss the book store!

Did you know? The Museum of London's collection of artifacts numbers about 1.1 million objects.

Tube: Easily accessible from Barbican (Metropolitan or Hammersmith & City Line), St. Paul's (Central Line) or Moorsgate (Metropolitan or Hammersmith & City Line)

Admission: FREE

In the surrounding area: St. Paul's Cathedral is a short walk away (hence the St. Paul's tube stop is a reasonable one for the Museum as well).  Sir Christopher Wren's masterpiece has been the site of much pomp and circumstance, including State Funerals for Admiral Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington and Sir Winston Churchill.  It was also, of course, the site of the wedding of the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer.  Visit the Crypt to see Sir Christopher's tomb, as well as Lord Nelson's.  A large wooden model of the Cathedral is also here, as are examples of vestments in the Cathedral's collection.  Going up from the main sanctuary, you can climb to the Whispering Gallery (yes, it really works!) and further - to the Stone Gallery (you can walk outside here and get a great view over the city) and all the way to the Golden Gallery, the top of St. Paul's.
